I never wanted to be a lawyer. I just wanted to dress like one.
It was 2006 and I was working at a white-shoe firm. All the male partners ( the only kind at the time) were dressing in colorful, creative, perfectly fitting suits. Where were they getting these clothes?
Soon after, I noticed one man more impeccably dressed than any of them, making rounds across the office, showcasing fabrics and taking orders for sport coats, button-downs, and trousers. It turns out that man was… the tailor.
I eventually convinced him to make me a suit. The first time, we got the color right and that's about all; he couldn’t make anything fit my female body.
When I finally opened my bar results that fall, I breathed a sigh of relief – although I didn’t pass, I realized I had been more excited about dressing to practice law than actually practicing it.
That’s when I knew I could build something better. This epiphany only gained momentum as, in the months following, I found myself in more and more situations where I desperately wanted a special suit that I could not find.
My desire for a perfectly fitting, one-of-one suit was met with a myriad of confusing looks, ill-fitting garments, or flat-out rejection. There had to be a better way for women to get dressed.
And so, Emily Meyer was born—because it was about time someone figured out how to create the highest-quality, bespoke suits for all. Full stop.
